Children Pt. 1

Children of Men is a powerful cinematic masterpiece with rhetorical overtones strewn throughout. It depicts the dystopian reality that would come to pass if by some chance there were an abrupt end to human reproduction. The world as it is known in this reality, already on the brink of collapsing due to social and economic pressures is pushed even further by the knowledge that there will be absolutely no future for the human race. The once proud and glorious nations of the world are all collapsed and fallen into 3rd world despair. Other counties such as America, Spain, France, and Australia have all completely collapsed, and by doing so leave Britain alone as the one nation that are, “Standing strong”. This raises a direct question that is still something that is debated very heavily in today’s society; amnesty. As Britain is the only country that is still standing on its own two feet, it takes a very aggressive stance on its immigration laws, by deporting all the aliens within its borders so that only British citizens are legally allowed residence. However, this ‘strong’ government is a very powerful propaganda machine. The combination of a highly nationalist government and the complete lack of procreation is the perfect setup for the governments not allowing the first baby to be born in the last 18 years to be known as anything but a British citizen’s child. However the problem is that the first child belongs to an alien. This story follows the protagonist and this new mother as they try to get the child out of the country to safety to attempt restores hope to a planet without hope. This is a planet which has lost all its children, and this lost all hope, this child is seemingly the one thing that could reunite the world, and possibly bring peace.

There is a single question that throughout time as been asked and re-asked since the dawn of time: What is the meaning of Life? There are many different viewpoints as to what the actual meaning of life is, however I take my stance firmly upon the values of several sources. First and foremost I follow a value system that was set forth by the Bible and my Savior Jesus. However after the 'knowing' the meaning in my heart comes the analytical ‘knowing’ in my mind. One of the people who has influenced my thoughts on this subject is Viktor Frankl, a Vienna born Existentialist who survived the holocaust and while doing so discovered what he thought were the ways to find meaning in one’s life. The ‘search’ for meaning, as Frankl believes, is derived from 3 main points; to find meaning in fully experiencing another person, to find meaning in a work, or to find value in suffering. These three statements have since been some of the driving forces behind my life and also the lives of many of my friends with whom I’ve read the book with. I attempted in the past to find meaning in working, dedicated myself to my schoolwork and exercise. This I found however not the way in which I find true meaning was. The value in suffering I was unable to fully appreciate simply because true suffering is something that I have not experienced true suffering. And thus It comes to me that I have, only recently, found meaning in my life by falling in love with a beautiful woman, whom we’ve only known each other briefly, however I feel as though I am actually, for once, falling into true love…experiencing another person fully.
